Hebrew Alignment(Vox): REST! "Shabbat"

שָׁבַת


The word is generally used as "rest" (noun or verb), a better rendering (translation) would be to "ceasing (from work)", as resting does not necessarily denote what kind of rest it is!
In the Tanakh and Siddur describe Shabbat as having three purposes:
1.    To commemorate God's creation of the universe, on the seventh (7th) day of which God rested from (or ceased) his work;
2.    To commemorate the Israelites' redemption from slavery in ancient Egypt;
3.    As a "taste" of Olam Haba (the Messianic Age).
