אֱלֹהִים
In the NASB, the typical translation would be first masked by the English, and secondly by the translators understanding (Theological leaning!).
For the Translator to be very sincere, he would keep to the original text and allow the reader to decide for himself.
While "Elohim" is usually rendered as "God" or "gods", the singular or plurality is based on Hebrew grammar and context.
While "Elohim" is usually rendered as "God" or "gods", the singular or plurality is based on Hebrew grammar and context.
In Psalm 82 it is clear that the "Most High" Elohim is YeHoVaH himself! The other "elohim" are the 'spirit beings' that work in His Council (Congregation)! Elohim is therefore not term used exclusively for God - the Most High or the 'gods' of his helpers. A better Hebraic concept is to think of "Elohim" is a term of reference to all 'spirit' beings outside of Time-Space-matter.
So now reading Psalm 82 in this light!
So now reading Psalm 82 in this light!
82:1 [[A Psalm of Asaph.]]
Elohim(God) stands in the congregation of El (Poetic for God); He judges among
the elohim(gods).
82:2 How long will you judge
unjustly, And respect the persons of the wicked? Selah.
82:3 Judge the poor and
fatherless: Do justice to the afflicted and destitute.
82:4 Rescue the poor and needy:
Deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.
82:5 They know not, neither do
they understand; They walk to and fro in darkness: All the foundations of the
earth are shaken.
82:6 I said, You are elohim, And all
of you sons of the Most High.
82:7 Nevertheless you shall die
like men(adam), And fall like one of the princes.
